Soho Farmhouse has turned this quiet corner of Oxfordshire into one of the most in-demand pockets of the Cotswolds, and a private cottage nearby is, for most groups, a far more comfortable way to spend a few days here than a hotel room — more space, your own kitchen, and somewhere to properly unwind between visits to the club. The question is less whether to base yourself nearby than where: Great Tew, Chipping Norton and Kingham each offer a genuinely different kind of stay, and the right choice depends on what your group actually wants from the trip.

Great Tew: On Soho Farmhouse’s Doorstep

Great Tew is about as close as you can get without staying at the club itself — a genuinely beautiful estate village of thatched, ironstone cottages that have changed remarkably little in two centuries, built around the Falkland Arms, a cosy sixteenth-century pub, and Quince & Clover, a walk-in café in the village’s Old Post Office known for its all-day brunch and own-brand ice cream, both a short walk from most doors in the village. The appeal is obvious: step out of a cottage here and you’re minutes from the gates. The village itself, though, is tiny, with very little available to rent directly — most groups treat Great Tew as somewhere to visit for a pub lunch or a coffee at Quince & Clover, and base themselves a few minutes further out in Chipping Norton or Kingham instead.

Within this pocket, Villa Vista sits on the private Heythrop Estate just six minutes from Soho Farmhouse — a striking midcentury villa sleeping eight across four bedrooms, with a wood-fired hot tub, sauna and roof terrace set among the trees. For a smaller party, Dovecote Cottage is an immaculately converted one-bedroom dovecote in nearby Duns Tew, around five miles from Soho Farmhouse and ideal for a couple who want to be close without needing much space.

Chipping Norton: The Practical Base

A few minutes further on, Chipping Norton offers what Great Tew can’t: a proper working market town, with its own shops, restaurants, a Market Square, and everyday amenities that make a longer stay easier to manage. It’s still only around nine minutes from Soho Farmhouse by car, but it gives a group somewhere to explore beyond the club itself — a wool church, the distinctive silhouette of Bliss Tweed Mill, and a handful of genuinely good places to eat, from The Chequers — where former Wild Thyme chef Nick Pullen now cooks — to a proper pint at The Fox. For a first visit to this part of the Cotswolds, or a group that wants a base with its own character rather than just proximity, Chipping Norton is usually the more practical choice — and our full guide to Chipping Norton covers the town in depth.

For larger parties, Hank’s House sleeps up to twelve across seven bedrooms, with a cinema room, hidden bar, heated pool, sauna and gym — a genuine one-off, almost on Soho Farmhouse’s doorstep. Bridleways, in a quiet hamlet just outside town, sleeps eight across four bedrooms, three of them on the ground floor, with generous gardens well suited to families.

Kingham: Space, Quiet and a Direct Rail Link

Kingham sits a little further out — around fifteen minutes from Soho Farmhouse — but it earns its place on this list for two reasons. First, it has its own mainline station, with direct trains to London Paddington in around 1 hour 25 minutes, which makes it the natural choice for groups arriving by train rather than car, or for anyone wanting the option of both. Second, it’s simply quieter: a genuinely lovely village in its own right, home to The Wild Rabbit, and generally home to larger properties and more generous grounds than you’ll find on Great Tew’s tighter footprint. It suits multigenerational groups, longer stays, or anyone who wants Soho Farmhouse within easy reach without building the whole trip around it. Our guide to Kingham, Churchill, Bledington and the Oddingtons covers the village and its neighbours in more detail.

Choosing the Right Cottage Near Soho Farmhouse

There’s a genuine trade-off between proximity and everything else. Villa Vista, on the private Heythrop Estate, and Dovecote Cottage, in neighbouring Duns Tew, both sit within minutes of Soho Farmhouse and suit a couple or small group for whom distance matters more than anything. Chipping Norton offers a wider range of properties and the convenience of a town on your doorstep, still within ten minutes of the club. Kingham trades a few extra minutes in the car for more space, more privacy, and — for train travellers — a station of its own. For most groups, particularly families or larger parties who want somewhere properly comfortable to retreat to, Chipping Norton or Kingham tend to be the better-value, more flexible choice.

Planning Your Visit

By road, this part of Oxfordshire sits on the A44 and A361, within easy reach of the A34, and around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours’ drive from London. By rail, Kingham station is the natural arrival point, with direct Cotswold Line services from London Paddington roughly every hour. Oxford Airport is the nearest for private aviation, around 20 miles away.

This area sits within what is often called the Golden Triangle, alongside Stow-on-the-Wold and Burford, both worth considering as a slightly further-out alternative base for a longer stay that takes in more of the wider Cotswolds.
