Converted from the mill house built for Bruern Abbey, Cope - a classic Cotswold cottage - has a stunning 30′ by 15′ library (with hundreds of books) come drawing-room and dining-room, with its high pitched roof and big Gothic stone fireplace has a light and elegant atmosphere; more chateau than cottage. The large, pretty en-suite bedroom has a gleaming, dark polished wood floor, a high pitched ceiling and a 6′ bed framed by off white hangings. A door leads into a trellised terrace, where you can drink your morning coffee surrounded by Mediterranean scents of lavender, cistus and roses. FULL DESCRIPTION
A stunning 30′ by 15′ library/drawing-room/dining-room, with a high pitched roof and big Gothic stone fireplace. Tall bookcases frame the windows and the desk at the back of the room; in the middle is a large round dining table, and arranged around the fire are a deep off-white sofa, a couple of armchairs in off-white and pale rose, a club fender and a pair of large matching stools. The atmosphere is light and elegant – more chateau than cottage: the curtains and window seat cushions are striped in rose and white , the walls are pale grey and the woodwork off white – picking up the colours in the Aubusson style needlework rug. The books, hundreds of them, a bibliophile’s dream, provide a richness that anchors and articulates the room and stops it from tipping over into pretty–pretty.
The large, pretty bedroom has a gleaming, dark polished wood floor, a high pitched ceiling and a 6′ bed framed by off white hangings. It looks wonderful against the wallpaper, a soft grey green and white chinoiserie pattern by Colefax and Fowler whose massive scale is perfect for the room. Opposite is an off white painted French armoires and antique mirror hangs over a mahogany chest of drawers. A door leads into a trellised terrace, where you can drink your morning coffee surrounded by Mediterranean scents of lavender, cistus and roses. The ensuite bathroom has pale coffee marbleised tiles and a marble-topped vanity unit. There’s a power shower over the bath and a mirror running the whole way down one wall.
The kitchen is flagged in cream Cotswold fossil stone from Farmington quarry nearby, and has cream units with wooden work surfaces. It is very well equipped for large or small-scale catering, with a range cooker with six burners and two ovens, a big stainless steel side-by-side US style fridge and freezer, two dishwashers and a washing machine/ dryer, plus a microwave in the island unit in the centre: It is necessary, because although two people will feel cosy by the fire in the drawing room, the furniture can be moved out and the room transformed into a dining room for twenty or thirty for a big lunch or dinner. Cutlery, porcelain and glasses for thirty are all stored in the cottage. It is a spectacular room, either for a party or as a communal meeting place when groups of friends or family rent several cottages. (An extra charge applies when it is used for a large-scale party as opposed to a family rendezvous – £100 if two tables are set out and £150 if three are needed; and if you wish to have a dinner or lunch party in Cope your friends must be staying in the other Bruern cottages.)
In the heart of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, between Chipping Norton, Stow-on-the-Wold and Burford, Bruern are not just the only luxury cottages in the Cotswolds to welcome guests just as a hotel does from just a single night, both during the week and at the weekend, but are in fact one of the few luxury holiday rentals in the whole of the UK to offer this service. Bruern Cottages offer the comfort and attention to detail of a good hotel, combined with the privacy, independence and space of home, amidst the civilised ease and style of English Country House living.
